Kauaeranga Valley, Thames
A super fun summer trip with great swimming holes, old dams and gorgeous scenery. Heading up to the Pinnacles take the Moss Creek Fork left from Webb Creek. You can start following the Kauaeranga River from underneath the swing bridge or walk another 20 minutes along the track and look out for the old sign saying Kauaeranga Gorge. Keep following the main flow upstream through a stunning gorge with some small swims and climbs. After crossing the old dam you end up on the Rangihau Track. Go right to join up with the Pinnacles Track. Mike White and Darren Donnelly hold the trip record of 2 hours 45 minutes from car park to car park. Give yourself around 5 hours for your first time. Take thermals, snacks and a waterproof camera.
